Standardisation is about the configuration, not the logo.
GUE training uses a standardised equipment configuration because consistency helps divers work effectively as a team, learn procedures efficiently and develop skills that transfer from one course to the next.
The exact equipment requirements vary by course. Basic Fundamentals, Technical Fundamentals, Cave and CCR training do not all require the same equipment, so it is important to check the requirements for the course you are planning rather than buying a complete setup based on a generic GUE equipment list.
Equipment must also be properly maintained and suitable for the planned diving. A course is not the place to discover that a drysuit leaks, a regulator needs servicing or an unfamiliar configuration does not work as expected.
GUE's standards also recommend that students consult a GUE representative before the course to verify equipment requirements and the suitability of their chosen equipment.
Do I need Halcyon equipment?
No — not for open-circuit GUE training.
GUE training is based on a standardised equipment configuration rather than requiring a particular brand. Several manufacturers make equipment that can meet the requirements, although some products make it considerably easier to achieve the intended configuration than others.
Equipment can differ in how easily it can be configured, how well it integrates with the rest of your system, and how much modification is needed to achieve the intended setup. Brand is not the requirement; configuration and suitability are.
CCR training is different. GUE's CCR programmes are unit-specific. For the CCR courses I offer, you must train on an approved unit: either a JJ-CCR or Halcyon Symbios CCR, depending on the course.
Two Halcyon systems with different configurations. The brand alone does not determine whether equipment is suitable for a GUE course.
Talk to me before you buy
Don't buy first and ask later.
If you're planning a GUE course, contact me before buying or significantly changing your equipment. I can help you understand what the course requires, what you already own that can be used, and where it makes sense to invest in equipment.
This is particularly important for doubles, technical equipment and CCRs. Some choices are straightforward; others can become expensive to change once you've bought them.
You don't necessarily need to replace everything you already own. Bring me your questions before making significant purchases and we can work out what makes sense for your course and your longer-term diving.
Basic and Technical Fundamentals use the GUE base equipment configuration, with additional requirements for the Technical rating. Technical Fundamentals requires a double-tank configuration.
Technical Diver 1 and 2 build on the GUE equipment configuration with additional stage, decompression and other equipment appropriate to the course and dive plan.
CCR training combines the GUE equipment configuration with unit-specific requirements and bailout equipment. CCR Fundamentals allows a smaller bailout configuration than CCR Tech 1 and Tech 2.
One of the most common mistakes I see is assuming that taking a GUE course means buying an entirely new equipment setup.
Sometimes a change is necessary. Sometimes an existing piece of equipment is perfectly suitable. And sometimes a different product would make it much easier to achieve the required configuration.
That is why I prefer to look at what you actually have before recommending that you spend money. Send me a list or photographs of your equipment and we can work through it before you buy anything significant.
CCR equipment is a different decision
Don't choose a rebreather based on a shopping list.
A CCR is a major investment, and the choice of unit affects how you train, configure your equipment and plan your future diving.
For GUE CCR training, the unit matters because the programmes are written around specific rebreather platforms. The GUE CCR courses I offer are on JJ-CCR and Halcyon Symbios.
Not necessarily. Basic Fundamentals can be completed using the GUE base configuration with a single tank, while Technical Fundamentals requires the double-tank configuration. If your goal is GUE technical, cave or CCR training, Technical Fundamentals is the relevant prerequisite.
Can I use equipment from another manufacturer?
Usually, yes, provided it meets the course requirements and can be configured appropriately. This is why it is better to discuss the actual equipment with your instructor than to rely on a brand list. GUE's standards focus on the required configuration and explicitly recommend checking the suitability of selected equipment before the course.
Does GUE require a particular computer?
Don't buy a computer simply because someone online says it is "GUE approved". Equipment requirements can be course-specific, and the suitability of a particular computer depends on the course and how you intend to use it. Talk to me before buying one for a GUE course.
Can I use a different wing, backplate or regulator brand?
Potentially, yes. The important question is whether the equipment can meet the required GUE configuration and function properly within the team procedures taught on the course. Some products make this straightforward; others can make it unnecessarily difficult.
What about AI transmitters and other accessories?
Some accessories are straightforward to integrate; others may affect the required configuration or the procedures used during training. Do not assume that an accessory is suitable — or unsuitable — based only on online discussion. If you use a transmitter or other additional equipment, tell me before the course and I can check it in the context of your complete configuration.
Planning a GUE course?
Before you spend money on equipment, talk to me. I can help you understand the requirements for your course and make sensible decisions about what you need now and what can wait.
